Former Prince’s Trust volunteer, Steven Carrutthers, proudly represented Northamptonshire’s Prince’s Trust as a finalist for the Samsung Young Achiever of the Year Award at the Celebrate Success Awards 2015 held in London in March. Steven was nominated by Team Leader, Wayne Taylor, after turning his life around on the 12 week personal development course.

Steven’s story is an inspiration to others after he experienced difficulties during his childhood and was placed in care from an early age. He has since turned his life around following his struggle through problems with drugs and alcohol and being trapped indoors by debilitating depression and social anxiety.

The glittering ceremony, hosted by Ant and Dec, recognises the achievements of young people across the country who are supported by the Prince’s Trust who have succeeded against the odds, improved their chances and improved their local community.

Steven completed the course without missing a single day and was able to tell his very emotional personal story to an audience of 90 at the end of Team presentation. He then went on to embrace opportunities to grow while becoming more independent.

Steven said:
“If I didn’t join the course my life wouldn’t have changes, I would be doing the same as always, struggling to live a life and wanting it all to be over with. I thought my life was meaningless, found it hard to make friends and meet new people always keeping to myself and shutting off from others to feel safe.”

During his 12 weeks on the course younger team members looked up to him as a leader and role model which he enjoyed, leading him to return as a volunteer for The Prince’s Trust for more than a year after he completed his programme.

Wayne Taylor, Team Leader for Prince’s Trust Team – Northampton South said:
“Steve became a different person in such a short amount of time demonstrating confidence with his methods when working with others in the Team and external partners. As his confidence increased he enjoyed taking responsibility to lead and encouraged the others.”

Steve is now in full-time employment with Barclaycard and his confidence is still strengthening.
