Leading the Way for Digital Skills Training
Tresham College of Further and Higher Education has welcomed a report from the House of Lords published this week; Make or Break: The UK’s Digital Future*, which highlights the need to address the growing shortage of young people capable of filling jobs in the technology sector by improving digital skills.
Evolve Business Training, Tresham’s employer responsive arm launched its Social Digital Apprenticeship in January 2014 and has bucked a national trend in recruiting apprentices to study the programme which develops online skills in an ever growing digital world.
According to the report there has been a decline in the number of apprenticeships taken across all subjects and in IT this has fallen by 8% from 2013/14 compared to 2012/13. Tresham has in fact increased its number of apprentices in IT through the Social Digital Apprenticeship which has been offered in companies of all sizes across Northamptonshire.
Tresham saw a 25% increase in apprenticeship starts within ICT in 2013/14 compared to 2012/13 contrary to the national trend.
Rachel Kay, Managing Director and Deputy Principal at Tresham said:
“We have over 70 vacancies for apprentices across all sectors including 4 within the Social Digital apprenticeships which we are hoping to fill during one of our specialist apprenticeship events next week. The news that the House of Lords back the need to address the shortage in digital skills means that we will continue to develop partnerships and our staff to ensure our apprentices have work to go into and gain on the job experience for a successful career fit for the 21st century.”
