This distance learning course will enable you to gain additional skills and a qualification without disrupting your day-to-day life. You will have access to specialist support from dedicated tutors throughout the programme.
This unit aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of end of life and palliative care including different attitudes to death and dying, the aims of and approaches to end of life care and the support services available, it will provide the knowledge and skills needed in order to provide support for managing pain and discomfort, including how to minimise pain and the approaches to managing pain. You will gain an awareness of the impact dementia can have on an individual's end of life care and will learn how to support those individuals and their family and friends. This qualification looks at the role of a care worker around the time of death of an individual, including how to support an individual, how to care for a deceased individual and legislation around this and the process of loss and grief, to gain an understanding of how to support people following bereavement and how to manage your own feelings of loss and grief.
The units you will study are:
1. Understanding how to work in end of life care
2. Care planning in end of life care
3. Understand how to provide support to manage pain and discomfort
4. End of life care and dementia
5. Understanding the role of the care worker in time of death
6. Understanding loss and grief in end of life care
Once it has been confirmed that you have fully completed the course, there are several next steps that you can take. You can go on to study another level two distance learning course. Or you could move on to one of our Level 3 Distance Learning courses. Alternatively, you could enrol on to our Access to Higher Education course (subject to interview) or the Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification (subject to entry requirements).
By completing any of the above courses, you will gain the skills and knowledge that employers find desirable. It is also a great opportunity for continuous professional development.
You will be provided with a resource pack with assessment booklets to complete. There is also an option to study this course online via our bespoke e-learning portal.
