Why study this course?

A highly creative, ideas based course tailored to meet the specific needs of this exciting and evolving industry. Mentored by experienced, practicing tutors you will develop a portfolio covering traditional print, digital, advertising, branding, corporate identity, illustration and typography.

Our tutors have experience working with Laura Ashley, Ideal Standard, Water Aid, Oxford Playhouse, Ford Motor Co and Oxfam UK.

What will I study?

You will study the following compulsory units: graphic design practices, techniques and processes, professional development and professional
practices, external design projects, typography, collaborative and
advanced design projects and contextual studies. Specialist units could
include: communication in graphic design, branding and identity, art
direction, surface design and conceptual design practices, creative
industries placement and photographic practices.

Students have carried out live projects and work
placements at Kettering and Corby Borough Council, SC Agency,
Adrenaline Alley and Elgoods Brewery. Many of our previous students
have gained careers with UK wide Graphic Design Agencies and other
related industries.

What will I be able to do after I complete this course?

Many of our previous students have gained careers in areas including - Marketing, Interior Design,UK wide Graphic Design Agencies, Illustration, Teaching and as self-employed Graphic Designers.
Completing the HND can also lead to a Level 6 Top-Up year to gain a full BA Degree.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments are portfolio based and include critiques, presentations and group work. You will be tasked with creating graphic design projects in a range of mediums. You will also have the opportunity to present to external clients to ensure you are ready for your next career step.

Are there any additional costs?

You should expect costs of between £100-£150 per year for art materials (e.g. range of paper/pads, pens/pencils, drawing aids) dry materials (oil and soft pastels, graphite, water-proof pens and charcoal) and wet materials (paints, acrylics, inks, variety of brushes). The optional trip abroad will incur extra cost, this will discussed at interview.

Pay by instalments
The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course

Is there anything else I need to know when considering this course?

For students studying on a full time basis, your timetable will include a minimum of 15 hours of teaching in our Mac suite, printmaking, photography and design studios. You are expected to conduct a minimum of a further 12 hours each week on private study and enrichment activities taking the opportunity to use the library and studio outside of formal lectures and design time.

Full time applications must be made via, the UCAS code for this course is GD01 for the 1 year HNC and 5W9W for the 2 year HND. Part time applications can be made directly to Tresham College.

Please note that all students who wish to apply for this course who are non-native English speakers, or have not studied the final two years of school/college in English, must demonstrate capability in English to a standard commensurate to:
-IELTS 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 being awarded on individual sections
-PTE Academic score of 42 to 49.
