English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL Entry Level 1)


Why study this course?

This study programme is ideal if you are a student whose first language is not English, and you wish to develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for use in a variety of work, study and everyday life situations. The study programme is offered from beginner level through to advanced level. It will allow you to learn and practise English in a variety of ways, including in the workplace. You will also develop your maths and ICT skills within an English environment. Part of the programme includes educational visits and social activities, in addition to an enhancement programme with the opportunity to play sport and access work-based e-learning.

What will I study?

During this study programme you will cover a variety of language and other skills, including: • Reading, writing, listening and speaking • Grammar and structure • Pronunciation • Vocabulary development • Maths • ICT (developing computer skills) • Employability skills (including work placements)

What will I be able to do after I complete this course?

After successful completion of this course you will be qualified for entry onto a wide range of other courses within the college.

How will I be assessed?

During the programme you will be assessed through examinations and assignments.

Are there any additional costs?

Included in the fees are costs for a text book to accompany the delivery of the programme. There may be associated trip costs.

A range of excursions to enhance your language skills are organised throughout the course.

What qualifications will I gain?

You will work towards English Speaking Board ESOL awards and certificates and Functional Skills Maths certificates at an appropriate level. The levels are: • Entry Level 1 • Entry Level 2 • Entry Level 3 • Level 1 • Level 2 Your teachers will do practice exams with you throughout the year before entering you for exams.
