College’s ILT Heroes Visit Viglen

Viglen Visit

During the summer Tresham's ILT Heroes were given a tour of  Viglen's headquarters and factory in St. Albans. Viglen, an IT company formerly overseen by Lord Sugar, specialises in the manufacture, implementation and maintenance of educational IT.

Tresham's ILT Heroes are a team of learners from a variety of courses at the college who provide information learning technology support and advice to staff and other learners at each campus throughout the academic year.

During their visit the group were given a presentation about the history of the company, their mission and some of the projects they have taken on, including the college's new campus in Corby. This was followed by a tour of the company's headquarters, starting with a tour of the sales department by Dario Rebaudengo (Internal Sales Manager) to ensure that they got to see all sides of the company.

Following this the group moved on to visit product development with Nik Whiddett.  Learners were able to see the process of product designs and how they become a final product.  The final part of the tour was on the factory floor with Anthony Potter, the Manufacturing Manager, where learners saw Tresham's systems being built.

The visit provided the opportunity for Tresham's ILT Heroes to ask several questions about the process of design and modelling of new products as well as how the service and maintenance of products were considered in their design, particularly for public use systems, which need to be secure from the abuse of users, but remain easily serviceable.

However, the team was primarily interested in the server room, where they saw the entire range of servers being constructed, including the high-performance systems akin to those built for CERN.

The visit culminated in a meeting with Bordan Tkachuk, a regular on the BBC's Apprentice programme, for Tresham's learners to ask questions about the company and the industry itself benefiting from Bordan's extensive experience.

Mark Tinney, ILT Coordinator and Lecturer at Tresham said:
“We are very grateful to Bordan Tkachuk and Viglen for inviting us down to what was an excellent day for both Tresham's ILT Heroes and myself.  We hope that next year's team will be able to participate in a similar day and that some of our learners will apply for work experience opportunities at Viglen."
