Catering students take the reins at Cheltenham Festival

Tresham students studying Hospitality and Catering at the college’s Manor Restaurant attended the week long Cheltenham Gold Cup Festival on Monday 9th March to gain work experience of a lifetime.

The students from all levels worked for one of the largest catering companies in the UK; Compass Group PLC (a world leading food services and support services organisation, offering contract catering and facilities management). This year all our students were working with them for five days as waiting staff, delivering food in tents and enclosures all around the racecourse, and serving prestigious companies, celebrities and guests.

After completing a training day on the Monday they were then able to deliver a great service to those attending one of the largest horse racing festivals in the UK. Whilst working at the Cheltenham Festival the students lodged at the Forest of Dean in Whitemead, an 1 hour and 30 minutes’ drive away from the event.

Working for events on this scale provides students with the opportunity to gain an insight into large scale catering and provides a sense of what it’s like working in the industry at such an event enhancing their confidence levels. They are able to communicate more effectively which in turn strengthens teamwork. They had to interact with each other as well as other colleagues and supervisors, employed directly through Compass Group PLC, on a daily basis.

One student commented: “My feet were very sore after the week at the races, but the experience gained was second to none”.
