A Heroic Performance
A number of Tresham’s Performing Arts students recently took to the stage at The Corby Cube in the hugely popular musical show ‘Danny Hero’, with HNC student Martyn Still taking on the lead character of Danny.
The Made In Corby production tells the story of an awkward teen outsider, Danny, who emerges himself in a comic book world where he does battle with archenemies such as The Walking Dread. The show draws on the difficulties that Corby has faced, such as closing industries, and uses unscrupulous businessmen as its inspiration for the evil figures that Danny must defeat.
Martyn, who enrolled at Tresham University Centre in September to further his acting career, was shocked to have been offered the lead role, as he explains:
“I’ve been involved with the Corby Amateur Theatrical Society (CATS) for two and half years now and have taken part in a number of shows, but nothing on the scale of Danny Hero. I went along to auditions hoping to get a smaller role, but was asked to perform one of Danny’s key songs. When I got the phone call to say I had got the lead role I thought that they were joking, I was stunned”.
Kim Laughton, a Performing Arts tutor at Tresham, also starred in the show playing the role of Danny’s mum. Kim said:
“I was so proud to share the stage with talented Tresham students. The whole experience was inspiring for all of us and I can see that the students have more confidence and motivation to achieve their ambitions. It was amazing seeing the journey from the first rehearsal to the final show. Many of them are applying for drama school now and I believe they will go to their auditions having been inspired”.
Following the success of the show, Martyn is now turning his attention to his studies and plans to work towards gaining a HND in Performing Arts with Tresham:
“My tutors were really supportive during my time in the show and helped me balance my studies with the rehearsals. Before joining Tresham I was considering an Open University course, but I’m really pleased I chose this route. I’m benefitting from the one-to-one support; especially because I’ve had a three year break from education and needed to ease back into academic study”.
