Up to 90 apprenticeships specialising in social media are being created at Tresham College of Further and Higher Education thanks to a £50,000 grant from Northamptonshire County Council.

The money will be used so the college can implement a Digital Youth Academy, which will provide young people with skills and qualifications to professionalise and commercialise their social, digital and networking skills.

The academy is about linking the natural skills of a generation with those of businesses who want to improve their online presence to grow and expand.

Tresham is the only college in Northamptonshire to be able to offer the accredited social digital apprenticeships which will see apprentices work with employers to understand their brand and develop their digital marketing strategy.

Cllr Andre Gonzalez De Savage, county council cabinet member for economic growth, strategic infrastructure and public protection, said: “I’m very proud that the county council is supporting this scheme as it has the potential to make a big difference to the lives of up to 90 young people.

“What we found was that the younger generation felt very comfortable using social media while many established businesses needed guidance in helping them implement their digital marketing strategies.
“Therefore it made absolute sense to bring the two things together, creating an array of advantages for the people of Northamptonshire.”

Rachel Kay, Managing Director and Deputy Principal at Tresham College of Further and Higher Education said:

“We are delighted to be working with Northamptonshire County Council to offer this cutting edge apprenticeship to help businesses improve their online presence in a digital world. Our Digital Youth Academy will offer young people and adults alike the chance to earn whilst they learn the invaluable skills of the future.”

The apprenticeships meet the needs of any business that uses, or wants to use social media or digital marketing to grow their business.

They will be based in the workplace, attending college for approximately 12 days per year. Course work, in the form of work-based tasks, is completed via e-learning and e-portfolio, while an assigned assessor will maintain regular contact through site visits and conduct a formal review every 10 to 12 weeks.
