Who should be considered for the xl programme?

The xl network targets area where economic disadvantage all to often sits alongside low levels of attainment, poor behaviour and attendance.

xl is particularly aimed at young people with the following characteristics:

  • Alienation and isolation within school
  • Difficulties with basic academic skills
  • Distracting, disruptive, and aggressive behaviour
  • A record of truancy and absenteeism
  • Under-achievement – not meeting their potential
  • Non-participation in school activities
  • Lack of parental support and understanding
  • Minority status
  • The inability to make and keep friends

Evaluation has shown that xl clubs integrate more quickly and stand the best chance of success if they have a good mix of pupils.

Towards the end of the academic year, when young people are required to choose their options, those that are experiencing problems or identified as being at risk of exclusion could be asked to consider joining xl.

Participation on the xl programme is voluntary and so it is hoped that those identified as needing it most will be convinced of the benefits.
