Young Apprentices Cook Up New Options

02 Oct 2007

Tresham Institute welcomed its first group of Catering Young Apprentices at its Corby campus tin September. The group of young apprentices are aged 14 to 16 and are being offered the opportunity to take a more vocational route as an addition to the traditional GCSE programmes.

Tresham Institute is working in partnership with a number of local schools in Rutland including Vale of Catmose in Oakham and Uppingham Community College in Uppingham as well as employers to offer the alternative programme to students beginning Year 10 this September.

The Young Apprenticeship programme allows students to experience work as well as achieve vocational qualifications outside school alongside the core curriculum such as English, Mathematics, Science and ICT which are taught at school. Students will spend one day a week at college and up to 50 days work placement over the two year Apprenticeship programme, working towards their vocational qualifications through lessons at Tresham Institute and direct experience from the workplace. The other three days a week will be spent at school.

As part of the programme students will be studying for an NVQ in Food Preparation, equivalent to 4 GCSEs at A*-C. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to prepare and cook meat, fish, vegetables, soups, sauces, pasta, rice, eggs, pastry and dough items as well as having the opportunity to gain a Basic Food Hygiene Certificate. Students will be assessed by assignment work and supervised work placements.

This programme enables students to find their most suitable style of learning and aims to help them make choices for post 16 education whilst having the opportunity to gain a Level 2 qualification (equivalent to 4-5 GCSEs) and develop the social skills needed within the workplace.

Once students complete the Apprenticeship they can apply to study full time at college or school or continue on to a full time Apprenticeship which can result in successful employment or higher education.
