Students from the National College for Motorsport led by Tresham Institute, a college of further and higher education, zoomed ahead of their competition at the annual Walter Hayes Trophy race and secured 2nd place at the British Racing Drivers' Club flagship racing event which took place from 2nd November until 4th November 2007 at the Silverstone National Circuit in Northamptonshire.

A group of four students were selected whilst studying at the Institute's National College for Motorsport Centre Silverstone campus to prepare, test and work on one of the cars that took part in the annual Walter Hayes Trophy race.

Tresham Institute's driver James Nash drove a Van Diemen RF92 to compete in the race and achieved second place in the final which took place on Sunday 4th November with the help and support from Tresham Institute's team of students currently studying on the Motorsport Race Technician programme.

The Walter Hayes Trophy attracts over 150 Formula Ford 1600 single seater race cars in the three day event around the Silverstone National Circuit and this year it was one of the closest contests in its history. The first race took place in 2001 and began as a race for historic FF1600 cars at the Silverstone International Historic Festival.

Jim Harrod, Motorsport Manager for the National College for Motorsport.

"The students and staff did a fantastic job at this event and the college is very proud of them all.  James Nash drove the car brilliantly all weekend without incurring any serious damage and couldn't praise our students enough. Well done to everyone involved."

The National College of Motorsport is a partnership of three Further Education Colleges based in the heart of the motorsport valley led by Tresham Institute of Further & Higher Education. The college formed the first Centre of Vocational Excellence for Motorsport and Performance Engineering to tackle the decline and shortage of craft technician's skills within the motorsport industry. Tresham Institute provides training for students entering motorsport as race technicians.

The National College for Motorsport is currently enrolling for September 2008, if you would like any further information please visit the Motorport section of the website or call 0845 658 89 90.
