Team Astromega help students race ahead

16 Mar 2007

Students from Tresham Institute are zooming ahead thanks to the help of European Formula 3000 team, Astromega.

Astromega are providing an excellent opportunity to students from Tresham Institute, based in Silverstone and Weldon, by providing cars for students to prepare, set up, test and race at circuits across the UK and Europe. This high quality experience will hopefully form a progression route into full time employment with Astromega and onto other race programmes such as A1Grand Prix with Team China and the Open Belgium Formula Renault 1.6 Championship.

Students from Tresham Institute took part in various high level motorsport events and returned with excellent feedback form the motorsport industry.

Sam Moores and Barney Crumpler, Motorsport Race Technician full time students based at the Silverstone centre travelled to Belgium to work with Team Astromega at the Spa Francochamps circuit. They travelled to Brussels to the teams' base with English racing driver Craig Dolby who was hoping to secure the Formula Renault 1600 Open championship.

The students travelled with the team to Spa and worked with them for duration of a very busy but rewarding weekend. Craig Dolby went on to win the championship after finishing 2nd in the first race and winning the second race. Astromega Team Manager Sam Boyle reported back that Sam and Barney were crucial to Craig's success and proved invaluable to the team.

Team Astromega were so impressed by our students input that they invited them to stay on and help prepare a Formula Renault 2000 car for a test day at Spa the following week.

Several other students were hard at work at Silverstone at the final round of the British Touring Car Championship. Six students from the Weldon and Silverstone centres were selected to work alongside the tyre technicians from Dunlop Motorsport as they supported the teams racing at Silverstone. Tony Leake of Dunlop was very impressed by the commitment put in by the students and suggested that this alliance could be more permanent.

Formula Renault Team Coles Racing were also racing at Silverstone in the final round of the UK Formula Renault Championship and they too gave some excellent work experience to two full time students Russell Turner and Craig Dodd.
