A welcome from Tresham Students' Union President

Hi, I'm Ellis Deuchar, the elected President of the Tresham Students' Union for 2012/13 and it is my pleasure to welcome your interest in both the college and the Students' Union. Tresham is a great place to study and I hope you find a course that you will enjoy as much as I do mine!  I am in my final year studying A-levels in Media, Film, and Sociology and hope to go on to university next year to study TV and Film production. I have had great support with my studies and my university application from college staff who really do go the extra mile to help all learners.

Tresham Students' Union (TSU) is the representative body of all learners at Tresham, and we work with the college to provide learners' views on all aspects of our experience to help improve teaching and learning, services and facilities.  We hold regular “drop ins” and events at all campuses for volunteers from class groups to gather views, ideas and opinions which we then present, discuss with the College Management Group and then try to improve things for all the learners.  We are all the college customers and as they say, “the customer is always right!”  We also promote a varied programme of trips, activities and charity fund raising.

Last year I was elected as one of four 1st Year Officers on the TSU Exec Team.  I got thoroughly involved and saw how our views really did make a difference to our college experience.  We negotiated lower refectory costs , successfully campaigned for more social seating at the Kettering campus, gave our ideas for the VLE (Moodle) and designed a new front page, secured more ILT training for teachers and set up the trips and activities that we wanted to be involved with!

I have attended focus groups, manned the TSU kiosk on a regular basis to be available to all learners, sat on staff interview panels including helping choose our Principal, Stuart Wesselby who I now meet with regularly to ensure he knows what learners are experiencing and would like to see. I had a fantastic experience presenting our bid to be “College of the Year” at the LSIS Learner Voice Awards.  We went on to win and I was very proud to accept the award on behalf of all the learners whose views and ideas have made us the best college in the country for Learner Voice activities. I have also attended a 3 day training course in Stafford in preparation for my role as President of the TSU for the year 2012/13.  So I’ve already had some great experiences and you will be able to as well if you come to Tresham and get involved with TSU!

However it's not all study, meetings and big events. We have regular trips such as Alton Towers, the Clothes Show, Thorpe Park, the Gadget Show, the London Eye and to various theatre shows   We also raise loads of money for charities through our fun events which we organise ourselves.

If you are coming to an Open Evening come and have a chat with myself or others in our elected team - we enjoy helping all visitors and learners.  If you do decide to come to Tresham do get involved with TSU.  It’s a simple equation –The more you put into college life the more you get out of it!

 See you soon
