Demolition work has begun on the site for a brand new Further and Higher Education Centre in Corby.

The new campus for Tresham College of Further and Higher Education, which is to be located on Oakley Road, Corby represents a £35m investment in vocational training and skills development and delivery of a long-established aim of Corby's Regeneration Framework.

Replacing Tresham's existing facilities on George Street from 2011, the modern, high quality development at Oakley Road will support the link between the regenerated town centre and the new £10m Corby Railway Station via the planned Corby Walk.

The new campus will provide the community with greater access to skills and education within Corby, offering courses including Construction, Motor Vehicle, Hair and Beauty, as well as additional new provision in Business, Sport, Health & Care and employer-led work.

The majority of the funding for the new complex has been provided by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

Tresham is one of only twelve colleges within the UK to be granted approval for its redevelopment plans from the LSC, after it met with the strict criteria, highlighting a needs-based approach with explicit priorities and proving the readiness of the project.

The contribution the new campus will make to local economic regeneration and its support for the business development growth agenda in Corby were key to the success of this bid.

Mark Silverman, Principal at Tresham said,

"We are delighted to be taking the first steps forward for Tresham's new campus in Corby which will provide a modern, fully equipped learning environment for vocational training for school leavers, employees and adult learners in and around north Northamptonshire.

Tresham is committed to creating learning opportunities for all and with the support from the Learning and Skills Council and the HCA we are able to ensure these for the local community and local employers."

Margaret Allen, Homes and Communities Agency East Midlands Regional Director, said:

"The demolition work marks a significant milestone in the HCA's wider investment into the regeneration and redevelopment of Corby.  Our involvement has secured the required land to complete the town centre Parkland Gateway project, whilst enabling the college to remain at their current site at a nominal rent until the construction of their new facility is completed. Following the delivery of the new Olympic swimming pool and the planned opening of the Cube in 2010, it will now be possible to work with project partners to bring forward the comprehensive development of the Gateway site that will transform Corby into a place where people can live, work, enjoy leisure time and learn skills for their future."

Simon Evans, chief executive of North Northants Development Company said:

"This is very welcome news. The proximity of Tresham's new campus to improved transport links means these facilities will be a major asset not only to the people and businesses of Corby but the whole of North Northamptonshire.

There is a strong commitment amongst local and regional partners to develop learning and skills opportunities in our sub-region and we will make sure no time is wasted in delivering this important project."

Planning permission from Corby Borough Council was granted in May 2009 and funding from the Learning and Skills Council was agreed in October 2009. The new campus is due to open in September 2011.

Throughout the demolition of the old Corby Community College site and building for the new campus in Oakley Road, the existing site (in George Street) will continue to be fully operational.
