ESOL Full Time Programme
This full time programme will take one year or longer depending on the level and route you choose to take. It is possible to join the course for just part of the year. You will develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for use in a variety of everyday living, study and work situations. The level at which you start will depend upon your existing language skills and at the end of the course you will be able to take the City and Guilds Skills for Life ESOL examination and the ESOL for Work qualification.
ESOL Intensive ProgrammeThis intensive programme is 15 hours a week working towards an ESOL qualification. The programme is full time and ideal for learners that do not work during the day. On completion of the 6 weeks a qualification will be taken, either the City and Guilds Skills for Life ESOL or ESOL for Work, and then progression to another class either a further full time programme or part time one at the appropriate level.
ESOL Workshop
The workshop is designed for learners who work shifts and are unable to attend regularly. All learners are encouraged to work towards the City and Guilds Skills for Life ESOL qualification. The workshop runs from 9.30am to 8.30 pm for one day on each campus. You will be encouraged to develop your reading and writing skills and there will be an opportunity to take part in discussions, conversations and other speaking activities. You will also be able to access your learning via the computers.
ESOL at Work (ASDAN)
The new qualifications are shorter and more work-focussed than traditional ESOL qualifications, giving learners practical English skills in essential work-place matters, such as health & safety and customer service. As well as better accuracy, efficiency and effectiveness, the new qualifications will help employers benefit from improved communication and productivity and enable employees to get on at work.
Case Study
Borislaw is a sixteen year old who was born and educated in Cracow in Poland. He moved to the UK with his family about eighteen months ago and is a pupil at The Manor School in Raunds. He does not attend English classes with the school but with the encouragement of the education authorities enrolled for ESOL classes at the Wellingborough campus.
At interview it was apparent that Borislaw was a pleasant outgoing type who was keen to improve his English. He intends to make his life in the UK and realises that he needs to improve his language to achieve the best career options. Initial assessment placed him at Entry Level 3.
Since commencing classes at the beginning of September, his progress has been quite remarkable. He did study English grammar at school in Poland and this has helped. The most noticeable improvement is in his speaking which has improved overall communication.
Borislaw will sit City and Guilds (3692) ESOL examinations in November and will take all three modules, Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. If successful, this will enable him to move into the Drop-in Workshop in December and start his studies for Level 1 qualifications.
