Fresh Start Offered at Tresham

Tresham is offering an opportunity for people who are considering leaving full time education at school or college or who may have left it too late to start a course in September to start a new full time course at one of its campuses in January 2010 providing a stepping stone into further study or employment.

Learner Advisers at each of Tresham's campuses in Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough are offering advice to people who may be interested in studying at the college to discuss the different options and the courses available starting in the next few weeks.  Advice on the Educational Maintenance Allowance is also available which can offer up to £30 per week for students at the college.

Courses starting in January 2010 include a vocational qualifications in Construction, Engineering, Food and Drink Service, Food Preparation and Cooking, Painting and Decorating, Pathway to Employment and Training, Plumbing, Wood Occupations as well as a brand new Pre-A Levels course designed to prepare students who wish to study A Levels in September 2010.

The Introductory Certificate in Basic Construction Skills is a good place to start for people with no prior knowledge or experience in construction providing basic training in construction skills for those seeking employment in the construction industry.

The Engineering Foundation course is designed to enable the learner to experience and develop skills across a range of Engineering based subject areas. Students develop practical mechanical skills including bench fitting, turning, milling, together with welding using the Arc and MIG processes as well as developing skills using the industry standard CAD software, AutoCAD.

Serving Food and Drink NVQ 1 and Food Preparation and Cooking NVQ 1 are introductory courses designed to help students to bridge the gap between school and a career in catering and possibly studying at NVQ level 2. Practical skills will be gained in the public restaurant and diner. Serving Food and Drink units include Preparing Dining Areas, Serving Customers, Customer Care, Dealing with Payments, Providing a bar and drinks service and other service techniques. Units covered in the Food Preparation and Cooking NVQ 1 include Hygiene, Working with Others, Health and Safety,  Preparing Fruit & Salads, Preparing and cooking Vegetables, and preparing and cooking fish, meat and poultry.

The Introductory Certificate in Painting & Decorating is a good place to start for people with no prior knowledge or experience in construction. It will provide basic training in construction skills for those seeking employment in the painting & decorating industry.

The Pathways to Employment and Training (PET) - Level 1 offers a range of qualifications including: Job Seeking Skills, E-Citizen, Adult Literacy, Adult Numeracy, as well as a BTEC Certificate in Vocational Studies. PET is a practical, hands-on programme giving people a chance to explore opportunities and to acquire appropriate skills in a vocational area. During the course students complete a BTEC Introductory Certificate in Vocational studies and adult qualifications in literacy, numeracy and ICT. The Certificate is made up of units from construction, engineering, sport, land, hospitality, ICT, art, Performing Arts, business, travel, tourism and finally health and social care. 

The Introductory Certificate in Plumbing Skills is a good place to start for people with no prior knowledge or experience in construction. It will provide basic training in construction skills for those seeking employment in the plumbing industry.

The Introductory Certificate in Wood Occupations is a good place to start for people with no prior knowledge or experience in construction. It will provide basic training in construction skills for those seeking employment in the wood occupations industry.
